Get information about Dentures with the explanation of specialist dentist Mehmet Ali Koldas.

While removable dental prostheses used to have wider areas of use, they are less preferred types of dental prosthesis today. The expansion of the use of dental implants, the advancement of advanced surgical techniques and implant surgery has pushed these removable prosthesis types back in preference. It is a type of prosthesis used to increase the comfort of the patient and reduce aesthetic anxiety during the required average of three months. It is produced from acrylic or resin-based materials. The construction period varies between one day and four days. It is prepared in a laboratory environment after the necessary jaw measurements and records are taken orally. It is not recommended to be used as a permanent prosthesis, except in cases where it is necessary, because it moves a little and covers a wider area than the teeth.

What are the potential issues that may arise when using total prosthesis?

Total prosthesis might move when speaking and eating since the tissue supports them. Due to the tongue’s location in the lower jaw, the mouth’s ability to move, and the lower jaw’s limited surface area, these issues may be more common in the lower region. The lower prosthesis generally moves, according to  complaints. This situation may cause  dented areas in lower prothesis. The patient should fix that dented areas by going to any dental clinic.

Is there a way to keep total prostheses from moving?

Although specific retention adhesives used under the prosthesis help to reduce the problem, they cannot completely eliminate it. The best way to solve this problem is to use various clamps attached to the implant. Full dentures, sometimes known as snap in dentures, can be removed and cleaned as needed. Although the amount of bone is the most important determining factor in the number of implants used, generally two implants are used for the lower jaw and four implants for the upper jaw. Since these prostheses are supported by both the implant and the tissue, they minimize problems such as movement and bruising while eating.

The service life of these prostheses is directly related to patient care. Some patients may break these prostheses due to reasons such as dropping or sitting on them. In such circumstances, the prosthesis might be supported internally by a metal abutment. In prosthesis fractures, the prosthesis can be repaired and delivered to the patient within 1-2 days. Total prosthesis can be numerous as a result of factors such as rapid weight loss and bone loss. These loose prosthesis can be adjusted to fit the palate using specific materials.
